Gary Andersen, Wisconsin in touch about coaching job

UPDATE: Gary Andersen is reportedly taking the Wisconsin job.

USA TODAY Sports

Following an 11-2 season in which his Aggies reigned victorious in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, Utah State head coach Gary Andersen immediately interviewed for the vacant Wisconsin coaching gig, according to a report by Pete Thamel of SI.com.

The 58-year-old Andersen is one of three men to have already concluded interviews for the job alongside Jacksonville Jaguars assistant Mel Tucker and Bowling Green coach Dave Clawson.

With Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez eager to announce a brand-new coach to eliminate uncertainty surrounding his football program, Andersen represents an intriguing option for the school with such a short timetable expected before an announcement.

For Utah State, though, this news clearly has to come as a bit of a shock. The school pulled out its wallet to lock up Andersen and his staff through the 2018 season less than three weeks ago, and is now forced to deal with the very real possibility of losing the same coach they just signed to a long-term deal. Tucker remains the most likely candidate of the three, but it’s quite evident that Andersen is more than willing to bolt Utah State if Alvarez comes calling.
