All that reportedly stands in the way of Butch Davis becoming the next head coach of the FIU Golden Panthers is a dispute between the coach and his former employeer, the North Carolina Tar Heels, but the dispute is not a small one.
Butch Davis to FIU delayed by UNC contract dispute, according to report
The $1.8 million settlement North Carolina owes Butch Davis is standing in the way of Davis accepting the top gig at Florida International, according to a FOX Sports report.

According to a FOX Sports report, North Carolina is unwilling to pay a $1.8-million settlement the two sides agreed upon when he was fired from Davis’s previous job if he is to accept the postion at FIU. According to reports, the original structure of the settlement was to be three $590,000 annual payments between 2013 and 2015, but that money is forfeited if he accepts the FIU job, according to North Carolina.
There were reports out of Florida that Davis had accepted the job at FIU, but FIU’s athletic director, Pete Garcia, denied the claims.
Davis accepted a non-traditional staff position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in order to avoid forfeiting the settlement this year, which could impact him taking the job at FIU for next season.
