2012 FCS playoff results: Sam Houston State upsets Montana State, 34-16

In the FCS quarterfinals, No. 5 Sam Houston State traveled to Bozeman and upset No. 2 Montana State, 34-16.

In the FCS quarterfinals on Friday night, No. 5 Sam Houston had an exceptional explosion en route to upsetting No. 2 Montana State, 34-16. The Bearkats’ 17-0 second quarter was the big difference. In that quarter, Montana State’s offense had three possessions, went three-and-out on all of them and accrued just 13 total yards.

The Sam Houston State offense was led by quarterback Brian Bell, who completed 11 of 21 passes for 254 yards and also had three touchdowns. Bell was able to beat the Montana State secondary with multiple deep passes, including 45- and 56-yard scoring throws. Running back Tim Flanders ended up with 103 yards on the night.

Montana State was missing their starting running back, Cody Kirk, who left the game with a high ankle sprain, and they were without Big Sky defensive player of the year Jody Owens in the second quarter.

Montana State turned the ball over twice, which led directly to 14 points for Sam Houston State.

Box Score Hero: Sam Houston State QB Brian Bell threw for 254 yards on 11 of 21 passes as well as three touchdowns. Bell also rushed for 33 yards.

Next Week’s Schedule: Sam Houston State will take on Eastern Washington in the semifinals.
