Mario Cristobal returning to Miami as associate head coach

The former FIU head coach will join his alma mater’s staff as an assistant.

Update: The specifics on Mario Cristobal’s duties:

Former Florida International head coach Mario Cristobal has reportedly joined the staff of the Miami Hurricanes, according to Football Scoop. Previously, CaneInsider.com reported Cristobal will join Al Golden's staff in Coral Gables as wide receiver coach, assistant head coach, and recruiting coordinator. The 42-year-old Miami native is a Miami alum, and played offensive line for the Hurricanes from 1989-1992.

Cristobal was fired at FIU due to an apparently conflict with university administration, less than a year after he reportedly turned down the Rutgers job to remain at FIU. After being dismissed back in December, Cristobal was linked with the South Florida vacancy, which eventually went to Western Kentucky’s Willie Taggart.

Cristobal had a 27-47 record in six seasons in charge of the Golden Panthers. However, he coached FIU to consecutive winning seasons in 2010 and 2011, the first two in school history. He also won the Sun Belt title in 2010, and brought the school to back to back bowl appearances.
