Former Minnesota Golden Gophers wide receiver A.J. Barker was arrested Sunday night in Houston, Texas, on suspicion of marijuana possession, according to court records obtained by the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Barker reportedly posted $500 bail after being charged Monday.

The ex-Gopher, who accused Jerry Kill of mental and emotional abuse and mistreatment of injuries, was arrested in Houston, Texas.
Barker was supposed to start classes at the University of Houston Monday after transferring out of Minnesota at the end of fall. The junior from St. Paul’s De La Salle High School was leading Minnesota in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, when he suffered a sprained ankle in the Gophers’ Oct. 27 win over Purdue. In November, Barker claimed head coach Jerry Kill mismanaged his injury, refusing to allow trainers to conduct an MRI and berating him during his rehabilitation. He later claimed that Kill was attempting to “manipulate” him mentally and emotionally. It was this alleged abuse that led to Barker’s transfer.
Barker has not been offered a scholarship by Houston, and is not listed on the team’s roster:
“We did not add A.J. Barker or any other walk-ons to our team in our usual add window at the start of the spring semester,” Houston team spokesman David Bassity told the Pioneer Press early Wednesday afternoon. “He was never offered a scholarship from Houston.”
There has been no comment from Kill or the Minnesota program on Barker’s arrest.
