East Carolina has decided not to renew the contract of defensive coordinator Brian Mitchell, according to ECU Insider, Denny O’Brien.

The 44-year-old Mitchell has served as the team’s defensive coordinator and secondary coach since 2010. Mitchell, who was a seventh-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 1992 and played three seasons with the team as a cornerback, had no prior collegiate coaching experience prior to his stint with East Carolina.

Under Mitchell in 2012, the Pirates’ defense allowed 276.8 passing yards per game, a mark that ranked 102nd in the nation. East Carolina’s total defense ranked 87th in the country and allowed a whopping 430.7 yards per game to their opponents.

The Pirates (8-5, 7-1 Conference USA) ended the season with a 43-34 loss to the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns in the New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 22. It was the school’s 13th bowl appearance in school history, and their fourth consecutive bowl loss.
