Fiesta Bowl features rare 1-point safety, plus Ron Cherry’s explanation

WE HAVE WITNESSED A ONE-POINT SAFETY, AND 2013 IS REALLY GONNA BE OUR YEAR. FORGIVE MY ALL CAPS. I’M REALLY EXCITED.

Update: According to reports, it’s only been done four times in major college football history.

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A ONE-POINT SAFETY? BET YOU HAVE NOT!

BUT IN THE 2013 FIESTA BOWL, KANSAS STATE BLOCKED AN OREGON EXTRA POINT, THEN ATTEMPTED TO RUN IT BACK. A WILDCAT PLAYER WAS EVENTUALLY TACKLED IN THE END ZONE, RESULTING IN WHAT WOULD’VE BEEN A SAFETY ON AN ORDINARY PLAY.

BUT IT CAME ON A CONVERSION ATTEMPT, AND THUS IT WAS A ROUGE. THE BOX SCORE OFFICIALLY RULES IT AS, “ALEJANDRO MALDONADO EXTRA POINT GOOD FOR A SAFETY.” INSANE THING TO READ. THE SCORE IS NOW 32-10, OREGON.

RON CHERRY’S EXPLANATION WAS MASTERFUL AS WELL: “WE HAVE AN UNUSUAL RULING ... ” HE BEGAN:

THEN HE EXPLAINED IT VERY SUCCINCTLY AND ACCURATELY. BUT, MAN, IF EVER THERE WAS AN OFFICIAL BORN TO DECLARE, “WE HAVE AN UNUSUAL RULING,” IT IS RON FREAKING CHERRY.

ONE-POINT SAFETY, EVERYONE.
