Notre Dame’s Everett Golson: Irish quarterback’s stats, highlights and more

Golson had an eventful season as a first-year starter, helping to lead his team to an undefeated record and BCS Championship berth.

Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson had not played a game of college football prior to this season, and now he's preparing to lead his team in the 2013 BCS Championship game against Alabama.

Golson played in 11 games during the regular season, completing 58.9 percent of his throws for 2,135 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Golson also gave the Irish a running threat at the QB position, and he accumulated more than three hundred yards on the ground.

The Irish offense hasn’t relied heavily on Golson’s arm to move the football, which may have helped him ease into a starting role. Notre Dame ran the ball an average of 40.6 times per game, while Golson averaged 25.6 pass attempts per game.

He spent his first two years at Notre Dame on the sideline before ultimately taking the starting job away from incumbent Tommy Rees in 2012. Rees was suspended for the Irish's season-opener, which opened the door for Golson to win the job. Rees has appeared in 11 games and got a start when Golson served a one-game suspension of his own, but it is Golson who has gotten the majority of the snaps this year.

The Irish may need more from Golson’s on Monday night, as they’re up against an Alabama defense that ranks among the nation’s best in a number of categories, including rushing defense. Notre Dame ranks 74th in passing yardage per game and 74th in passing efficiency. Moving the football has at times been a struggle for the Irish offense, but its defense, like Alabama’s, ranks among the nation’s best in several areas.

Below are some highlights from Notre Dame’s undefeated regular season, including some big plays from Golson.
