College football AP Top 25 poll: Florida State, Missouri move up in top five

The top two teams escaped a brutal weekend unscathed and remain atop the non-BCS poll.

The Alabama Crimson Tide maintained their position at the top of the Associated Press Top 25 poll after a week in which six of the previous top 11 teams lost. The Crimson Tide received 55 first place votes of the 60 available, staying comfortably ahead of No. 2 Oregon.

Florida State, which destroyed No. 3 Clemson Saturday night, moved into the Tigers’ vacated position, only one first-place vote behind Oregon. The Seminoles are followed by No. 4 Ohio State, which maintained its position with a 34-24 win over Iowa. Missouri rounds out the top five.

With so many top teams losing, the poll has been completely scrambled from the previous week. LSU, Texas A&M, Louisville, and UCLA, which were all in last week’s Top 10, have fallen into the middle of the Top 25.

The Associated Press college football poll is compiled by polling sportswriters. Since 2004, it has not been used in the BCS formula, but the poll does crown its own national champion. The Coaches Poll, which does factor into the BCS, is also out now.
