On Bobby Bowden Day, Florida State honored its legendary former coach by running a fake punt—and by annihilating an inferior opponent.
NC State vs. Florida State final score: Seminoles romp in 49-17 victory
Florida State made its case for staying at No. 2 with an easy, easy win over conference foe NC State.
FSU jumped all over visiting North Carolina State with a 35-point first quarter, then coasted to the victory in front of Bowden, who planted the spear at the 50 at the outset of the game in his honor. QB Jameis Winston had 229 yards passing and three scores in that first quarter alone, although we’re sad to report he did not keep up his 900-yard, 12-touchdown pace throughout the game.
Box Score Hero: All told, Winston had a pretty short day of work, leaving the game midway through the third quarter, but he put in 312 yards and three scores on just 17/26 passing. He remains on a very short list of Heisman contenders.
Rankings Ramifications: The good news is that FSU just demolished NCSU. The bad news is that the Noles might drop in the BCS standings, as Oregon faces No. 12 UCLA and is likely to beat the Bruins. If that’s the case, FSU’s razor-thin margin over the Ducks may be flipped tomorrow. Now’s not the time to panic about that, though; it is still October.
But Did They Cover? Florida State was favored by 35 points. They hit that in the first quarter. With two minutes still left in the first quarter, even! Ah, but Jimbo Fisher taking his foot off the gas pedal meant NC State covered.
