Duke vs. Virginia Tech final score: Blue Devils stun Hokies, 13-10

Duke picked up their biggest win of the season behind some gutty running in the 4th quarter.

The Duke Blue Devils earned bowl eligibility on Saturday evening as they went into Blacksburg and stunned Virginia Tech, 13-10.

The only scoring of the first half came on two Duke field goals, one from 51 yards out and one from 53 yards out just before the half. Midway through the third quarter, the Blue Devils finally reached the end zone on a 9-yard touchdown run from Anthony Boone to take a 13-0 lead.

Unable to get much of anything going all day, Virginia Tech finally woke up late in the third quarter. Logan Thomas led the Hokies to a 99-yard touchdown drive to get the crowd back into it, and then a 42-yard field goal cut the deficit to 13-10.

Duke answered with a couple of defensive stops, though, and a series of hard-nosed runs from quarterback Anthony Boone ran the clock out late in the 4th.

Box Score Heros/Zeros:

Logan Thomas: 21/38, 214 yards, 0 TD, 4 INT; 24 carries, 101 yards, 1 TD

Anthony Boone: 7/25, 107 yards, 0 TD, 4 INT; 11 carries, 44 yards, 1 TD

Rankings Ramifications: This is a bad loss for Virginia Tech, and there’s a chance the Hokies drop out of the top-25. The win will certainly help Duke down the road, though they’ll likely be left on the outside-looking-in when the new BCS rankings are revealed Sunday night.

But Did They Cover? Virginia Tech came in as a 12-point favorite, though some lines had them at 13 or 13.5 by kickoff. They failed to cover.
