As expected, Florida State’s thin advantage in the BCS standings over Oregon is gone after one week. The Ducks, who were surprisingly ranked No. 3 last week, have now slipped into position to play in the BCS National Championship -- assuming both that they remain undefeated and that nothing else crazy happens the rest of the way. As always, expect crazy things to happen and know that going undefeated is very hard for anybody.

The second edition of official BCS rankings have the Noles just outside of the national championship picture with six weeks still go to. But six week is a long time.

Oregon was able to hurdle Florida State due to a shift in the computer numbers brought on by the Ducks playing a superior opponent this week. The Ducks’ victim, UCLA, ranked No. 14 in the BCS computers last week, while NC State, the team Florida State roughed up, was unranked.
The Noles can make up ground this weekend with Miami in the house, but the rest of the way for both teams favors Oregon, if both can stay unbeaten. As always, we don’t say this in assumption that either will go unbeaten. It’s just the way things are lined up.
Outside the top three, the most important story to eye is whether Fresno State or Northern Illinois can sneak into either the final top 12 or the final 16, if an AQ-conference champion is 16th or lower. For now, that means watching whether Fresno State can stay ahead of UCF. If one of those mid-majors is able to make it in, that will mean one fewer BCS at-large spot for a team like perhaps Clemson, Miami, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, or Wisconsin.

Only once in the history of the BCS has neither No. 1 nor No. 2 in the Week 2 Standings played in the BCS National Championship Game. Texas and Alabama were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively on Oct. 26, 2008 (Week 2), and neither team played in the national title game.
The teams ranking No. 1 and No. 2 in Week 2 of the Standings have gone on to play in the BCS National Championship Game four times: 2004 (USC and Oklahoma); 2005 (Texas and USC); 2010 (Auburn and Oregon); and 2011 (LSU and Alabama).
The following schools boast their highest-ever ranking in the BCS Standings: Baylor (No. 6), Fresno State (No. 16), and Central Florida (No. 23 - tied).
Alabama has been ranked No. 4 or higher for 18 consecutive weeks.
