Oklahoma State vs. Texas 2013 reactions and highlights: Cowboys end Longhorns’ Big 12 title dreams

After a perfect start to conference play, Oklahoma State has brought Texas back down to earth.

Texas entered Saturday tied for the Big 12 lead with Baylor, as Mack Brown’s midseason turnaround of the Longhorns resulted in six straight wins to open up conference play. Those wins didn’t exactly come against marquee competition, however (with the exception of Oklahoma), and Texas looked to face a stiff test at home against Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon.

After a loss to West Virginia to open up conference play, Oklahoma State won five straight games in conference play, including a blowout win at Texas Tech. The Cowboys were favored to win this one, and did not disappoint, blowing out the Longhorns by a final score of 38-13.

Cowboys Ride for Free said the game settled what could have been considered a quarterback battle in Stillwater:

Clint Chelf was dominate early. He showed his "getting away from the cops" speed by marching the Cowboys down the field to draw first blood. Chelf rushed for 95 yards on the day.

Today's game erases any lingering doubts on who the starting QB should be.

Barking Carnival gave credit to the Texas offensive line for playing one of their strongest games of the season, but said it wasn’t enough against a very good Oklahoma State team:

It was a shame to waste a strong effort by the O-line in this one; they were really doing some impressive work in creating running lanes against stacked fronts early. Kudos to Applewhite and Searels for crafting an effective run game, and it’s certainly interesting to think what Bryan Harsin might have been able to accomplish in 2013 and 2014 when finally equipped with the kind of offensive front that wouldn’t embarrass any team with Top 25 aspirations.

Burnt Orange Nation said the Longhorns should expect better, and the recent home losing streak to ranked opponents is unacceptable:

To make matters worse, the Longhorns continue to rack up home loss after loss to top ranked teams since the halcyon days of Young and McCoy I (Saturday made it eight straight). This in spite of highly ranked recruiting classes and coaching staff overhauls since the now quite apparent program changing devastating loss at the hands of Alabama in the Rose Bowl fog.

Expectations were off the chart for the Longhorns as they entered the contest leading the Big 12 conference standings. Were those expectations justified? Yes and no. During the six game win streak before the matchup with OSU the team needed, arguably, a game breaking play here or there to rally for victory. In that vein we all were looking at a null set as the Cowboys exposed the real weaknesses of a seemingly resurgent Texas team.

Chelf was the star of the day for the Cowboys, running for two touchdowns and throwing for two more. Case McCoy threw three interceptions in the game, and one was returned for a touchdown by Justin Gilbert. Mack Brown was not happy.
