Florida Atlantic will not retain Brian Wright as head coach, report says

Florida Atlantic interim head coach Brian Wright will not be retained by the school, the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s Dieter Kurtenbach is reporting.

Wright got his start in coaching at Walsh University in 1995 as a graduate assistant. He moved on to Youngstown State as a GA in 1997, where he had the opportunity to coach on a team that would win the FCS national championship. He returned to Walsh the following year, before again heading back to YSU in 2001.

During his second stint at Youngstown State, Wright eventually worked his way up to offensive coordinator after initially just handling the quarterback coaching duties. The Penguins reached the FCS semifinals in 2006, the second year of his tenure as OC. He took the offensive coordinator job at Montana State in 2009. There he twice helped the program reach the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs before joining Carl Pelini’s staff at FAU in 2012.

When Pelini resigned abruptly in October amid allegations of drug use, it was Wright who was handed the interim head coaching position. Wright did well under the circumstances, leading the team to a 4-0 finish despite the turmoil. That winning streak to end the year got FAU bowl eligible, though the program did not receive a bowl invite.
