Just hours after signing a contract extension to stay with Alabama, Nick Saban denied ever considering the Texas job.

“The way this sort of got spun, it was a little bit more like, ‘OK, he got a new contract at Alabama, so he’s going to stay at Alabama instead of going to Texas,’” Saban told ESPN.com on Saturday. “I never considered going to Texas. That wasn’t even a conversation.
“I knew that if Mack stepped down, there would probably be an opportunity, but it wasn’t something I was interested in doing, not at this stage in my career.”
Saban was rumored to be interested in the Texas job, which is still occupied by the embattled Mack Brown, but he put pen to paper on a contract extension on Friday that will pay him $7 million a year to remain with the Crimson Tide. “I don’t want to go someplace else,” Saban said. “I don’t know how many times I can say that.”
Even before this extension, Saban was the highest paid coach in college football, but now he’s among the highest paid coaches in any sport in the world.
Whether Saban was ever really interested in the Longhorns job or he was just using as leverage for a new deal at Alabama, the fact is that he’s staying in Tuscaloosa. The question now is whether Mack Brown will leave the job at all. He’s reportedly fighting hard to hold onto his job in Austin, and with Saban off the table as an option, he may have the political capital to hang on for another year.
