2013 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl: Devin Gardner injury means freshman Morris starting

The Wolverines will be without their starting quarterback and kicker against Kansas State.

Update, Dec. 26: Michigan’s announced true freshman Shane Morris will start at quarterback due to Devin Gardner’s injury.

Michigan will be playing Kansas State in the upcoming Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, but will be without the services of kicker Brendan Gibbons, who did not travel with the team due to family reasons. Head coach Brady Hoke made the announcement Monday.

Gibbons, a fifth-year senior, set a program record with 141 consecutive extra point attempts made, and ranks fourth in school history in career field goals made. He made 15 of 20 field goal attempts this year, while backup Matt Wile made 1 of 3.

Meanwhile, a turf toe injury continues to linger with starting quarterback Devin Gardner, to the point where Hoke said true freshman backup Shane Morris, a former four-star recruit, would start if the game were held Monday. Gardner has thrown for 21 touchdowns and ran for 11 more this season, while Morris has completed five of nine passes this season.

The game kicks off Saturday, Dec. 28 at 10:15 p.m. ET.
