Despite not being a BCS bowl, the Cotton Bowl Classic is one of the more prestigious and historic bowl games played each winter. With the matchup usually featuring elite programs out of the Big 12 and SEC, fans are usually treated to one heck of a game in the Lone Star State.

The Cotton Bowl was first played in 1937 with TCU knocking off Marquette, which doesn’t even field a football team anymore. The annual game was played in the Dallas’ Cotton Bowl until 2010, when it moved to down the road to AT&T Stadium in Arlington. This will be the final year the Cotton Bowl is not affiliated with the College Football Playoff, which will begin next season.

Team with the most all-time appearances: Texas Longhorns (22)

Missouri (11-2, 7-1 SEC)

Missouri was another surprising success story in this year’s SEC, winning repeatedly with a fierce defense that forced turnovers and an efficient offense that got into the end zone with great frequency. The Tigers opened the year with seven straight wins, including victories over ranked opponents Georgia and Florida (a ranked Florida!).

Missouri’s only regular season loss came in pure heartbreaking fashion, as the Tigers allowed a tremendous fourth quarter comeback to Connor Shaw and South Carolina before an easy field goal clanked off the uprights in double overtime. Missouri won the rest of their regular season games, including two more ranked wins (Ole Miss and Texas A&M) before a 59-42 loss to Auburn in the SEC Championship Game.

Last bowl game: 2011 Independence Bowl vs. North Carolina, 41-24 win

All-time bowl record: 13-16

Head coach’s bowl record: Gary Pinkel, 5-4

Oklahoma State (10-2, 7-2 Big 12)

Oklahoma State took a tumble out of the BCS due to its Week 15 loss to archrival Oklahoma, but the Cowboys won’t fall far. Mike Gundy and company will meet back up with former conference rival Missouri in Jerry World.

OSU has been one of the country’s best teams for the latter half of the season, standing as the only team to beat Baylor and showing improved play on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Clint Chelf and top weapon Josh Stewart lead a diverse, lethal offense that relies heavily on the ground game, and potential All-America cornerback Justin Gilbert anchors a defense that’s been good enough to shut down most Big 12 defenses.

Last bowl game: 2013 Heart of Dallas Bowl vs. Purdue, 58-14 win

Last year without a bowl: 2005

All-time bowl record: 15-8

Head coach’s bowl record: Mike Gundy, 5-2
