Hal Mumme turns down James Madison job, according to report

The godfather of the Air Raid offense reportedly turned down the position after resigning from McMurry University.

Former Kentucky and New Mexico State head coach, and Air Raid offense innovator, Hal Mumme resigned from Division II McMurry University after saying he’d done all he could for the school. Mumme was reportedly set to take the scheme to James Madison as the offensive coordinator, but according to Football Scoop, he won’t be heading to Harrisonburg.

Additionally:

Mumme and then-offensive coordinator Mike Leach created the Air Raid offensive while at Iowa Wesleyan from 1989-91. Mumme and Leach took the offense with them when they went to Valdosta State and then Kentucky. Leach made the system famous during his tenure at Texas Tech and Mumme’s coaching tree includes Sonny Dykes at California, Dana Holgorsen at West Virginia, and Kiliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech with Leach landing at Washington State after being let go by TTU.

James Madison won the 2004 FCS National Championship and have made it to the postseason in five of the last nine seasons. They went 7-4 last season playing in the Colonial Athletic Association, but missed the playoffs.
