Former UNC player Marvin Austin says he was paid by agent named Terry Watson

Austin was one of several Tar Heels to receive impermissible benefits while in college, which ultimately got the UNC program put on probation.

During an investigation into the conduct of sports agents by the North Carolina Secretary of State, former UNC football player Marvin Austin admitted that he received money while in college from a man named Terry Watson. Watson, who is based in Georgia, was not a legal agent in North Carolina at the time.

Additionally, the investigation found "numerous wire transfer records to and from UNC-CH student-athletes, their relatives, friends, and others associated with them." Watson was found to have contact with other Tar Heel football players, including Kendric Burney, Greg Little and Charles Brown.

Austin was initially at the center of the NCAA’s investigation into the North Carolina football program, and he was later dismissed from the team. The Tar Heels self-imposed sanctions that included vacating all wins in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. The NCAA banned the team from postseason play in 2012 and placed it on probation until 2015.
