2013 USC spring game TV schedule, roster battles and more

Finding Matt Barkley’s replacement is the primary goal at USC spring ball, but a freshman running back is taking center stage.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The USC Trojans will hold their annual spring game on Saturday, Apr. 13, at 4 p.m. ET. The event will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks, as part the channel's coverage of all 12 conference spring games.

The quarterback battle is the major storyline at USC this spring. Four-year starter Matt Barkley is gone to the NFL, and there are three different players vying for the role. Anyone betting on a player named Max to take over the reigns has a good shot at being right. Sophomore Max Wittek and freshman Max Browne each are getting a chance, while Cody Kessler provides some name diversity.

Wittek has the most experience of the trio. He completed 36 of 69 passes for 388 yards, three touchdowns, and five interceptions as a freshman. Browne is the most heralded, coming in as the top quarterback in the 2013 recruiting class. Of course, this is USC, and Kessler had his share of accolades coming out of high school. All three are talented and each should get a chance to show off at the spring game.

USC quarterbacks get plenty of publicity, but the running back position is where the school dominates historically. The two tailbacks on the depth chart, Silas Redd and D.J. Morgan, are both done for the spring with injuries. That sets up an opportunity for the rest of the talented backs on the roster, and Justin Davis is seizing it, according to Conquest Chronicles.

Davis is a true freshman and is expected to give Redd and Morgan a battle in fall camp. He will be able to use spring ball to get a leg up on the competition and show he belongs.

There’s always one thing for sure at USC: there is no shortage of marquee talent on the depth chart. That’s a good problem to have for coach Lane Kiffin and should make for a competitive atmosphere during USC’s spring game.

Game time, TV schedule: 4 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Networks
