2013 Arizona spring game TV schedule, quarterback battle and more

Quarterbacks are usually center stage in spring ball, and Arizona is no different.

Rick Scuteri-US PRESSWIRE

The Arizona Wildcats will hold their annual spring game at 4 p.m. ET Saturday. The event will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks as part of the channel's complete coverage of all 12 conference spring games.

Any time a starting quarterback leaves, that becomes the position of focus in spring practice. Senior B.J. Denker is the most experienced with head coach Rich Rodriguez. He threw 37 passes in relief of Matt Scott last season. Denker will be challenged by incoming transfer and former USC quarterback Jesse Scroggins.

Scroggins left USC after some academic struggles and facing the daunting task of overcoming Cody Kessler and Max Wittek on the depth chart. He was still well-regarded out of high school and has plenty of talent to fit well in Rodriguez's fast-paced offensive system. Unfortunately for Scroggins, he'll have to impress the coaching staff in mostly non-contact situations. A foot injury has kept him out for most of spring practice.

Denker has done well with his opportunity as the primary first-teamer. He threw for 176 yards and four touchdowns in the Wildcats most recent scrimmage, with each score going to a different wide receiver. After the practice, Denker talked about the quarterback battle, via arizonawildcats.com:

“I don’t want the position given to me and I don’t think it should be. Competition makes you a better player and makes the team better. I’m fine with it being open; I don’t want (Coach Rodriguez) giving me the job. I want to earn it. Anytime I get in the game in practice, I’m going to try to show him that I’m the best man for the job and that he can win with me. That’s how I take every snap.”

If Denker can continue playing well in the spring, he has a chance to solidify his grip on the starting job. He’ll get one more chance to show off in the Arizona spring game on Saturday.

Game time, TV schedule: 4 p.m. ET Saturday, Pac-12 Networks
