2013 Tennessee spring game: How to watch or attend

The Tennessee Volunteers have their first spring game of the Butch Jones era on Saturday afternoon in Knoxville.

Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports

The Tennessee spring game will take place on April 20 at Neyland Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET. For those unable to attend the contest in Knoxville, the game will be streamed online via ESPN3 for video and Vol Network for audio. For those who want to watch on television, the game will be tape-delayed on ESPNU.

It will be the first spring game since Butch Jones took over as the head coach of the Volunteers. Named the Orange and White Game, it’s a scrimmage that takes place between Team Orange and Team White. Derek Dooley used to treat the winning team to steak dinner, but there is still no prize yet at stake for Jones’s spring game. Fan Day begins at 11 a.m. The game is generally free and open to the public, meaning no tickets will be needed. Last year’s attendance was estimated at 35,421.

Jones has been doing all sorts of curious things through the course of spring practice, like playing irritating noises at practice and coming up with responsibility campaigns titled “The Circle of Life.”

Joel Hollingsworth of Rocky Top Talk relates what Jones wants the Tennessee fans who show up to the game to see from their new team.

“We want them to see a vision,” he said. “To see a style of play that’s disciplined and fundamentally sound. We will be a blue-collar football team, a team they can relate to.”

The report from the previous weekend's spring scrimmage seems to favor the production the offense is giving, although the defense still has a lot of work to do too. Tennessee is struggling to keep players healthy though. The wide receiving corps is pretty thin, particularly after Jason Croom tweaked his ankle, leaving only four scholarship players to line out on the outside in this weekend's contest.

Competition is open at every position though, particularly with the team not to deep in skill players at any spot. Raijon Neal and Marlin Lane figure to be battling at running back, and Pig Howard will have to learn to be the number one option as a wide receiver on offense.
