The NCAA will allow teams with 6-7 records that lost their conference title game to play in bowl games, Stewart Mandel of Sports Illustrated reported. Previously teams needed a waiver to compete, but the NCAA decided to eliminate that clause.

In recent years, the 6-7 situation has happened to two teams.
The 2012 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets qualified for the ACC championship game with a 6-6 record and finished in a three-way tie with Miami and North Carolina in the Coastal Division. Both Miami and North Carolina were ineligible due to postseason bans, and Georgia Tech went on to lose to Florida State in the ACC title game. Georgia Tech finished an even 7-7 after beating USC in the Sun Bowl.
The 2011 UCLA Bruins qualified for the Pac-12 championship game after finishing second in the Pac-12 South. With first-place USC ineligible for the postseason, UCLA ended up losing to Oregon in the conference title game and fell to Illinois in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, becoming the only team to boast a 6-8 record.
