Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn has resigned, according to reports. Bohn served in that role for the school since 2005, and had signed a five-year extension in 2011. Colorado chancellor Phil DiStefano accepted Bohn’s resignation, and released a statement Tuesday afternooon:

Bohn has resigned as Colorado’s athletic director. He served during a tumultuous time in Colorado football, hiring head coaches Dan Hawkins and Jon Embree, who combined to go 20-54 from 2006-12.

“Mike Bohn led CU-Boulder athletics in a time of great transition and change,” said DiStefano. “We are grateful to him for his vision, passion and commitment, and for his key role in revitalizing men’s and women’s basketball, helping us to join the Pac-12 Conference, and in taking important steps to upgrade athletic facilities at CU-Boulder. We wish him well.”
Bohn hired three football coaches during his tenure, two of which struggled mightily. Dan Hawkins and Jon Embree went a combined 20-54 from 2006-12. As a result, fans often stayed home rather than attend games at Folsom Field. Bohn hired former San Jose State coach Mike McIntyre after the season in hopes that he could turn around the athletic department’s biggest money maker. Major new athletic facility renovations have been announced, making the success of Colorado football in coming seasons even more imperative.
Vic Lombardi of CBS Denver contradicted the statement from the Colorado athletic department, saying that Bohn was forced out of his role. Apparently Bohn himself was surprised.

The reaction over at the SB Nation blog Ralphie Report is mixed. Meanwhile, DiStefano says he will look for a “dynamic leader” who can “build on Mike’s vision and make it a reality” as Colorado’s next athletic director.
