Miami’s Vinny Testaverde in 2013 College Football Hall of Fame class

Vinny Testaverde, the 1986 Heisman winner and quarterback as Miami began to earn its reputation as The U, will join the College Football Hall of Fame, finally retired after a 21-year NFL career.

Miami’s Vinny Testaverde will be inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame, the first official member of the class of 2013, the National Football Foundation announced. The rest of the class will be announced Tuesday. He’s expected to be joined by Nebraska’s Tommie Frazier, for one.

He’s the 10th Miami player to join the hall, preceded by teammate Bennie Blades and coach Jimmy Johnson, inducted in 2006 and 2012, respectively.

The Brooklyn native followed in the footsteps of Jim Kelly and Bernie Kosar as Miami quarterbacks, was the starter as the University of Miami morphed into The U. With Jimmie Johnson as head coach, the Hurricanes went 21-3 in two seasons with Testaverde as the starter. They were 10-2 behind 3,238 yards and 21 touchdowns by Testaverde in 1985, in national title contention until a loss in the Sugar Bowl.

But 1986 was the season the Hurricanes really showed they were important on a national stage: they went 11-0 including a win over defending national champions Oklahoma. The undefeated regular season earned Testaverde the Heisman trophy. But after the team famously appeared in fatigues, Testaverde threw five interceptions in the Fiesta Bowl against Penn State, and he’d graduate without a title. Testaverde would be drafted first overall in the 1987 NFL Draft, after a season where he threw for 2,557 yards, 26 touchdowns, and nine interceptions -- five in the season’s final game. He’d stay in the league for 21 seasons, retiring with the seventh-most passing yards and eighth-most touchdowns of all time.
