Louisiana Tech athletic director Bruce Van De Velde is stepping down from his position, according to the university. The move is effective July 1, and deputy athletic director/senior woman administrator Mary Kay Hungate will serve as the interim athletic director until a full time replacement is found. Van De Velde gave no reason for his resignation, but did give this statement:

"My experience at Louisiana Tech has been both rewarding and challenging," said Van De Velde. "I am proud of my contributions to the competitive and academic success of our student-athletes and coaches, and to have enhanced a culture of honesty, integrity, competitive and academic excellence within the athletic department."
Van De Velde was hired as athletic director in 2010, and has been with the program since 2008. He was responsible for hiring Sonny Dykes, who led the Bulldogs to the nation’s top offense in 2012 before leaving to take the job at Cal.
A spot on his otherwise solid resume while in Ruston, however, is opting to forgo an appearance in the Independence Bowl in 2012 because they didn’t want to play in-state rival ULM. It’s certainly true that the bowl appearance would have likely cost the program money, but the move did not play well with both media and fans.
