Bob Stoops: Oklahoma fans should ‘get on board’ with tweeting at recruits

What could possibly go wrong?

Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops is not afraid to say what he's thinking. Even if he's thinking something unpopular or incorrect. He did just that at Big 12 Media Days this week, telling Carey Murdock of Sooner Scoop that OU fans need to be more active in tweeting at recruits, which is often technically a NCAA violation.

When asked if active fanbases on twitter had anything to do with teams like Ole Miss and Kentucky being ranked ahead of them in the recruiting rankings, Stoops responded:

“That’s something that’s becoming a part of it,” said Stoops when asked if he had concerns about fans contacting recruits on Twitter. “We may hire you to govern our social media with the fans.”... “I’m not kidding,” he said. “I don’t see it stopping. Once things get rolling, it’s not stopping.”

Since this is Bob Stoops, we’re not entirely sure if he’s kidding or if he just doesn’t know exactly what he’s saying. Unfortunately, he’s not the first coach to advocate fans tweeting at recruits, as Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin and Kentucky wide receivers coach Tommy Mainord said something similar.

I’m going to go on record here and say this is a bad idea, and that you, football fan, should not tweet at recruits. You don’t know them, they’re kids, it’s weird at best, and supremely creepy at worst.
