Former Washington coach Don James beginning chemotherapy

The former Husky coach will begin treatment Monday.

Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

Former University of Washington football coach Don James, 80, will begin chemotherapy Monday for a malignant tumor on his pancreas, according to The Seattle Times.

James coached the Huskies for 18 seasons, appearing in six Rose Bowls and winning four of them. A three-time national college coach of the year honoree, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

After setting five school passing records as a player at Miami, James was a graduate assistant at Kansas before coaching Southwest Miami High School. Following a three-year stint as the defensive backs coach at Florida State, he was promoted to defensive coordinator at the school before bouncing around in the same position to Michigan and Colorado.

James received his first head coaching opportunity at Kent State in 1971, where he was the head coach of Jack Lambert, Nick Saban and Gary Pinkel, and led the team to a 25-19-1 record over four years before being hired by Washington.
