Entering Thursday night’s road test at Georgia Tech, there were a lot of questions surrounding Frank Beamer’s Virginia Tech squad. The Hokies struggled offensively throughout the early portion of the season, scoring just ten points against Alabama, a mere 15 against a horrid East Carolina defense and 29 in a triple-overtime win against Marshall.

Virginia Tech’s defense was able to shut down Georgia Tech on the road, leading to Hokie fans dreaming of yet another ACC title game appearance this season.

It had largely been enough to win, however, as the Tide were Virginia Tech’s only loss. They entered ACC play sporting a 3-1 record and facing an undefeated Georgia Tech team that had scored at least four touchdowns in each of their first three games (while never allowing more than three).
The Hokies did their job in Atlanta, however, as two total touchdowns from Logan Thomas was all they needed. Virginia Tech held the Yellow Jackets to just 129 yards rushing, and won the game 17-10.
The win has Hokie fans hopeful, as Gobbler Country’s chicagomaroon thinks the win could suggest a conference title game appearance in Virginia Tech’s future.
It hasn’t been pretty, but Tech is off to a 4-1 start, a record that nearly anyone within the fan base would’ve taken five games in if asked before the season. And if history has anything to say about the Hokies, it’s that the road to the ACC Championship Game now comes through them in the Coastal Division.
The Georgia Tech faithful, meanwhile, are worried. With a tough road trip to face Miami next week, From the Rumble Seat’s Joey Weaver thinks the Yellow Jackets’ season could take a turn for the worse in a hurry.
I want to give credit to Virginia Tech. They played an extremely clean game offensively, offering up no opportunities for Georgia Tech’s defense to turn the momentum in their own favor. The Hokies’ offense wasn’t phenomenal, but they were good enough, and most importantly they didn’t lose the game.
Georgia Tech took this game, put it on a silver platter, offered it to the Hokies, and Virginia Tech took it. This falls somewhere between “Georgia Tech got beat” and “Georgia Tech downright lost”, but I think that Virginia Tech did way too much well for it to be completely the latter.
Luckily we get a few extra days to process here, because it might end up being a very rough trip to Coral Gables next weekend.
