Miami vs. USF final score: ‘Canes throttle Bulls, 49-21

Miami took a 49-7 lead in the third quarter and coasted to an easy win.

Miami overcame minur injuries to QB Stephen Morris and RB Duke Johnson to overwhelm the hapless USF Bulls, 49-21.

The game was out of hand early and often as the Hurricanes scored touchdowns on their first three possessions and didn’t even punt until midway through the third quarter. USF struggled with virtually every aspect of the game, and only tailback Marcus Shaw was a bright spot for the Bulls, with 20 rushes for 127 yards, most of which came in the first half when the game was still competitive.

But Morris and backup Ryan Williams (who also saw extensive work against Savannah State last week) utterly incinerated the Bulls secondary, throwing for 372 yards on only 27 attempts. Third-stringer Gary Crow also saw time late in the game, but at that point the score was 49-7.

Box Score Hero: In just under 20 minutes of work, Morris went 11-for-16 for 222 yards and two scores. Had he stayed in the game, he would have been on pace for nearly 700 yards passing—and the United Nations would have investigated Miami for war crimes.

Rankings Ramifications: There’s just nothing to be gleaned from a No. 15 team beating up on USF. USF is horrendous. Miami will need some help with unexpected upsets above it to move up in the rankings more than a spot or two, even with the lopsided margin of victory.

But Did They Cover? Miami was favored by 17 to 18 points. The ‘Canes hit the cover before the second quarter was halfway over.
