Iowa vs. Minnesota final score: Hawkeyes pound out 23-7 victory

Iowa’s bruising ground game and punishing defense combined for a convincing victory at Minnesota.

Iowa took home the Floyd of Rosedale trophy for the second straight year after a suffocating 23-7 win over interstate rival Minnesota on Saturday afternoon. The Iowa defense was the star of the afternoon, holding Minnesota’s monster rushing offense (averaging 282 yards per game coming into the week) to a minuscule 30 yards on 27 rushes.

Iowa QB Jake Rudock took another step forward in his career as a starter, with 15-of-25 passing for 218 yards, a score and a pick. Rudock converted several third downs of moderate length, and while he wasn’t elite he was good enough to keep the motor running for the Iowa offense.

Box Score Hero: Mark Weisman was Iowa's hammer of choice down the stretch, logging 24 rushes for 147 bruising yards and seven first downs.

Rankings Ramifications: The only team with any attention from the polls was Minnesota, with one whole vote from the Coaches Poll. Iowa’s win might raise an eyebrow or two, but there’s no serious shot of a Top 25 spot here.

But Did They Cover? Iowa was favored by three points.
