UAB reportedly naming Jacksonville State’s Bill Clark new head coach

The Blazers are dipping down into the FCS level to find their replacement for Garrick McGee, per multiple outlets.

Rob Foldy-US PRESSWIRE

UAB is finalizing a deal Tuesday to make Bill Clark its new head coach, according to multiple reports. Clark comes to Birmingham from FCS Jacksonville State, which he led to an 11-4 record and the playoffs in 2013.

He replaces Garrick McGee, who quit earlier in January to become the offensive coordinator at Louisville.

Clark spent just one season at Jacksonville State, which was his first head coaching job at the college level. Prior to that, he spent several seasons as an assistant at South Alabama. The bulk of his experience is at the high school level, where he built Prattville High into one of Alabama’s elite programs and was once named the state’s coach of the year.

Clark is stepping into a situation with significant challenges -- modest support and poor facilities like the ancient Legion Field UAB calls home have made winning difficult for the program since it moved to the FBS level in 1996. The Blazers have not had a winning season since 2004, and they’ve managed just eight victories total over the last three years. Each of UAB’s last three head coaches finished his tenure with a losing record; two of those, including McGee, left for opportunities elsewhere.
