Clemson QB DeShaun Watson likely out 5 weeks with hand injury

The true freshman quarterback has been a major part of Clemson’s success.

Clemson’s chances in a tough ACC game against Louisville have taken a major hit, as starting quarterback DeShaun Watson will miss the rest of the game with a hand injury, the school announced.

Update, 10/12: Watson will have surgery on his hand and will likely miss five weeks, per Scott Keepfer.

Watson was taken out of the game late in the first quarter after completing a pass to Wayne Gallman for a loss of 5 yards. That was one of only two completions for the true freshman on the day, finishing with a 2-for-6 line for -5 yards. Watson also ran three times for 10 yards in the game, and was the Tigers’ leading rusher at the time of his injury.

Watson took over for senior Cole Stoudt as the team’s quarterback during the team’s overtime loss to Florida State. Entering the game, he had thrown 12 touchdowns against one interception, averaging 11.1 yards per attempt while also running for three scores. The Tigers had won both games he had started this season, against North Carolina and North Carolina State.
