Two ACC teams trending in different directions meet Thursday night hoping to establish solid standing in the Coastal division.
How to watch Virginia Tech vs. Pitt: Game guide, TV schedule, streaming, odds
Two ACC Coastal teams meet in Pittsburgh Thursday night.

Virginia Tech enters having won two straight against Western Michigan and North Carolina to compensate for a two-game losing skid, winning with a combined 69-34 margin. In the latter, the Hokies forced the Tar Heels into three turnovers and 10 penalties. That prevented VT’s first 0-2 start in ACC play since joining the conference in 2004.
Pitt, meanwhile, enters the game having lost three straight to Iowa, Akron and Virginia. All three were decided by less than 11 points, and the Panthers averaged just over 16 points in each of those matchups. In their first three games of the season, the Panthers averaged close to 45 points per game. Thursday night shouldn’t be much easier: Virginia Tech ranks 23rd in the country, averaging just 19.8 points allowed per game.

The numbers
Rankings and records: Pitt is 3-3 (1-1 ACC) and unranked. Virginia Tech is 4-2 (1-1).
Vegas: Virginia Tech opened as a 2.5-point favorite.
Weather forecast: Rain showers, high of 67 and low of 53.
Two things at stake
A win would put one of the teams 2-1 and keep it atop a crowded ACC Coastal. Pitt likely has more to gain having lost its last three; another lackluster performance on offense would put even more pressure on head coach Paul Chryst. Two of those losses saw Pitt gain fewer than 311 yards.
One big matchup
Pitt's rushing offense vs. Virginia Tech's defense. James Conner enters the week ranked fifth in the nation with 145.7 rushing yards per game. However, he's been held under 100 yards in each of Pitt's last two games, against Akron and Virginia. Without a solid running game, Pitt will be forced to move the ball through the air, and its passing game ranks 116th with 161.5 yards per game.
