Ole Miss LB Denzel Nkemdiche out for season with broken ankle

The former freshman All-American missed time last season due to an injury as well.

Ole Miss linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche will miss the rest of the Rebels' season with a broken ankle, head coach Hugh Freeze confirmed to ESPN.

Nkemdiche, the older brother of defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche, suffered the injury in the first quarter of Saturday's loss to LSU. Through seven games this season, the redshirt junior recorded 28 tackles with 3.5 tackles for a loss, one sack and three quarterback hurries. He was a freshman All-American selection in 2012 after recording 82 tackles with 13 for a loss and three sacks, but saw his numbers dwindle in 2013 after being sidelined with a knee injury.

Serderius Bryant will replace Nkemdiche at outside linebacker, ESPN reports. Ole Miss stars Robert Nkemdiche, Cody Prewitt and Laremy Tunsil also suffered injuries Saturday, but Freeze told ESPN they are "day to day."

The 7-1 Rebels are still firmly in playoff contention, but will need a strong performance this week against a very tough Auburn offense to stay that way. If they pass that test, a season-ending Egg Bowl meeting with No. 1 Mississippi State could be a play-in game for the NCAA playoff.
