A true freshman is the new holder of the FBS record for most rushing yards in a game, as Oklahoma’s Samaje Perine went for 427 yards in the Sooners’ 41-7 win over Kansas. Perine had touchdown runs of 66, 49, 34, 33, and 27 yards, and averaged 11.7 yards per carry. Perine also broke the single game rushing records for Oklahoma (294, by Greg Pruitt in 1971) and the Big 12 (378, by Iowa State’s Troy Davis in 1996).
Oklahoma’s Samaje Perine re-breaks FBS rushing record 1 week after Melvin Gordon
The true freshman broke Melvin Gordon’s seven day old record as the Sooners smashed Kansas.
He was taken out of the game after the run that set the record, only 10 yards short of the Division I record, set by FCS North Carolina A&T’s Maurice Hicks, and 38 shy of the NCAA record, by Cartel Brooks of Division III Heidelberg.
Here’s the rush that set the record:

Perine breaks Melvin Gordon’s record of 408 yards, which was only set last week during Wisconsin’s win over Nebraska. It’s probably safe to say very few people thought that record would only stand for seven days, and even fewer would have suggested that a true freshman would be the one to set the new record. However, here we are.
Perine burst onto the scene this season after rushing for 242 yards and four touchdowns against West Virginia on Sept. 20th. The Pflugerville (Texas) native grabbed the starting job after Keith Ford went down with a leg injury against Tennessee, and while he’s been somewhat inconsistent from game to game, the gravity of his achievement is undeniable.
