Cal’s Pac-12 regular season is over, but the Bears still have the opportunity to hit a major milestone in head coach Sonny Dykes’ second season. With a win against BYU Saturday, Cal would be bowl-eligible for the first time since 2011.
How to watch BYU vs. Cal: Game guide, TV schedule, streaming, odds
Can the Bears clinch a bowl berth?
Cal went 1-11 in in Dykes’ first season at the helm, but have shown massive improvement in year two. The Bears opened the season with a win over Northwestern, and notched conference victories over Colorado, Washington State and Oregon State. The Bears also suffered narrow losses to Arizona, UCLA and USC. They also boast one of the nation’s most dangerous passing attacks.
BYU started the season 4-0, leaving some to wonder if they could finish the season undefeated. Then, star quarterback Taysom Hill injured his leg against Utah State (knocking him out for the season) and the Cougars lost four in a row. They’re now on a three-game winning streak, but Cal represents a pretty significant step up in competition.

Two things at stake
A win for Cal secures bowl eligibility.
A win for BYU would prevent their worst regular-season record since they became an independent prior to the 2011 season.
One big matchup
Cal passing attack vs. BYU secondary. The Bears’ offense is built to stretch the field and test opposing defenses, averaging 341.7 yards per game through the air. BYU has given up at least 300 passing yards in five different games, including 410 to Boise State in their loss a few weeks ago.
