Georgia Tech vs. Georgia final score: 3 things we learned from Yellow Jackets’ 30-24 OT win

Let’s say this was unpredictable.

It was one of the stranger games you will ever see. No. 16 Georgia Tech pulled the upset on ninth-ranked Georgia, intercepting Hutson Mason in overtime to seal the win. It's a good thing they picked him off, too, because their blocked extra point meant seven from Georgia would've spelled a loss. The win is Georgia Tech's first over Georgia since 2008, breaking a five-game skid.

Georgia Tech was able to force overtime with a 53-yard field goal by Harrison Butker at the whistle, just seconds after surrendering the lead on a late touchdown by Georgia. That would-be game-winning drive by the Bulldogs was only made possible by a Justin Thomas fumble on a pump fake.

So yes, this was an odd game. Any potential stakes outside of rivalry bragging rights were put to bed when Missouri clinched the SEC East Friday, and both teams made tons of sloppy mistakes. Georgia repeatedly shot themselves in the foot with red zone fumbles from Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, but not to be outdone, Georgia Tech had a goal line fumble of their own.

Let’s take a full inventory of this game’s miscues:

Two blocked field goals
One blocked extra point
Three fumbles inside the five-yard line (four overall)
An unintentional onside kick
A game-ending interception in overtime

This one was a classic.

Three things we learned

1. Mistakes come in bunches. This game featured a veritable buffet of mistakes that took points off the board. Each team had a field goal blocked, and both teams lost fumbles inside the five-yard line. In Georgia’s case, they lost two! That’s an awful lot of points to leave on the field. Rivalry games can tend to get a little sideways due to flaring tempers, but this one was one of the strangest games in recent memory.

2. Georgia Tech is going to give Florida State fits. The Seminoles are clearly the better team, but they can be had when teams run right at them. Georgia Tech ran for 399 yards against Georgia, and will not shy away from the run when they meet the Seminoles in the ACC Championship game. Hopefully for their sake, they finished getting all the mistakes out today, because you give Florida State one extra opportunity and they will not pass it up.

3. Maybe losing Todd Gurley wasn't the end of the world. It obviously hurts to lose an outstanding talent like Gurley, but Nick Chubb looked great carrying the load for the Dawgs. Outside of the early fumble, there wasn't any real drawbacks to his performance, only maybe that he didn't get the ball enough. Expect the Georgia offense to center on him and Sony Michel going forward and into next season.
