The No. 7 Baylor Bears lost quarterback Bryce Petty and endured a fourth-quarter comeback from rival Texas Tech but maintained its perch atop the Big 12 with a 48-46 win in a Saturday night shootout. The two teams combined for 1,254 yards of offense -- including 896 yards through the air -- and scored eleven touchdowns in total. The upset-minded Red Raiders had a chance at a late two-point conversion to tie the game, but fell short of completing the epic upset.
Baylor vs. Texas Tech final score: Bears hold on for 48-46 win over Red Raiders
A furious Texas Tech comeback falls short, and Baylor’s playoff dream still lives.
Petty was knocked out of the game with a concussion in the third quarter, with the Bears leading 35-17. Backup Seth Russell led Baylor to a score on the series, but the Bears' usual high-powered offense sputtered the rest of the way. The Red Raiders pounced on the Bears, scoring two touchdowns early in the fourth quarter to narrow Baylor's lead to five.
After a Chris Callahan field goal extended the Bears' lead back to eight, Texas Tech drove into Baylor territory. A pair of costly penalties backed the Red Raiders into a 2nd & 30. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed a 17-yard pass to Devin Lauderdale, then threw a bomb to Bradley Marquez for a touchdown. Baylor sacked Mahomes on the two-point conversion to preserve its lead, and Shock Linwood recovered the onside kick to preserve the victory.
Before leaving the game, Petty had posted typically absurd stats: 18/25 passing for 210 yards and two scores. Seth Russell went just 8/17 for 82 yards and a touchdown after taking over, but the second half was dominated by running back Shock Linwood. The sophomore ran 24 times for 158 yards, including 60 yards after Petty’s injury.
Mahomes, in just his fourth start, destroyed his career high with 593 yards passing and 6 touchdowns. Three receivers -- Jakeem Grant (150 yards), Bradley Marquez and DeAndre Washington -- caught more than 100 yards worth of passes from Mahomes, and five Texas Tech receivers caught touchdowns.
