The Bruins try to keep Pac-12 title hopes alive at Washington this weekend. Here’s how to see it.
The Bruins were largely left for dead after back-to-back home defeats against Utah and Oregon in early October, but they have rebounded to win three straight Pac-12 games. By far the most impressive of that streak -- and arguably the most impressive of the season -- came last Saturday, when UCLA held Arizona’s potent offense to just seven points in a 10-point victory. The Bruins are now just a game back of Arizona State for the Pac-12 North lead and hold a tiebreaker over the Sun Devils by virtue of a 35-point win in September.
Washington is still trying to find its way in its first season under new head coach Chris Petersen. After starting the season with four wins, the Huskies have stumbled to a 2-3 record in five conference games and need one more win to solidity a bowl trip. Now things get tougher, as top cornerback Marcus Peters was kicked off the team. Saturday’s game will be the fourth that Washington has played against a ranked opponent since September 27.

The numbers
Rankings and records: UCLA jumped to No. 18 in the most recent College Football Playoff committee poll, and enter Saturday at 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the Pac-12. Washington, at 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference, are unranked.
Vegas: UCLA is a 6.5-point favorite against the Huskies, with an over/under at 54.5 points.
Weather forecast: Saturday should be partly cloudy, with temperatures in the mid-50s.
Two things at stake
UCLA’s chances of winning the Pac-12 South title ride in large part on Saturday’s game. The Bruins are a game behind Arizona State and tied with USC, Arizona and Utah in the loss column. A two-loss team could still win the league, but a third loss with USC and Stanford still to come could well knock UCLA out of the race.
For Washington, a division title is effectively out of reach and bowl status should be safe. A victory over UCLA would ensure that Chris Petersen’s first season wit the Huskies is a winning campaign.
One big matchup
Washington rushing defense vs. Paul Perkins: UCLA's sophomore halfback is third in the Pac-12 in rushing yards per game and second in total rushing yards this season, with 1,074 yards and six touchdowns through nine games. Perkins has been largely responsible for UCLA's rushing attack, which is second in the conference behind only Oregon. While Washington has struggled on offense throughout the season, it has built a solid defense based on stopping the run, and sit third in the conference in rushing yards allowed.
