Pretty much every Michigan person wants Jim Harbaugh back

A former coach and two former Heisman winners have already publicly backed the 49ers head coach as the candidate for the Wolverines.

SB Nation 2014 College Football Guide

You may not have heard about this, but Michigan is looking for a new head football coach. It’s a pretty gigantic job, and one that has the potential to attract some big names.

One of those names is Jim Harbaugh, current head coach of the San Francisco 49ers and a former Michigan quarterback. His ties to the program and high level of success at every level has him as a popular candidate for the position, and we’ve now achieved MAX MICHIGAN MAN-ness in support of his candidacy.

How much Michigan man could you pack into four people? How about two former Heisman winners and two people closely connected with all-time great head coach Bo Schembechler? They’ve all spoken out in favor of Harbaugh as the next Wolverines’ head coach. Here’s a timeline of that vocal support:

December 4

Former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, who was an assistant under Schembechler while Harbaugh played at Michigan, is one of the first major Wolverine figures to throw his support behind the 49ers head coach.

“Everyone has an opinion, and I am no different,” Carr said Thursday. “If I had a choice, I would choose Jim Harbaugh. But it will be Jim Hackett’s decision, and that is as it should be.”

December 9

Former Michigan Heisman winner and current Oakland Raider Charles Woodson says he would rather Harbaugh coach the Wolverines than the Raiders, given the choice.

“I think if the choice was out there it would definitely be Michigan for me,” Woodson said. “A guy that played there. The fans would love it and I think it would be great for recruiting. Just to have a guy that’s proven, he’s won everywhere he’s been as a coach and I don’t think it would be any different if he went to Michigan so yeah, go blue.”

December 10

Former Michigan Heisman winner and current ESPN analyst Desmond Howard compared Harbaugh to “the cutest girl in school that everybody wants to take to the prom,” and said he could see him ending up at Michigan.

“If I was coaching like Jim, nothing would satisfy me more than to say ‘the hell with all this, I’m going up to Ann Arbor and I’m getting that ship right, that’s going to be my coaching legacy.”

December 11

Bo Schembechler’s son, Shemy, says his father would want Harbaugh in the job.

“I think my dad would say ‘Jim, it’s time to come home,’ ” Schembechler said. “That’s exactly what he would say.”
