Marcus Mariota, Quarterback, Oregon Ducks
Mariota’s passing line is 254-372 (68.3%) for 3,783 yards, 38 TDs, and only 2 INTs, which averages out to 10.2 yards/attempt and 291 yards/game. That’s good for a passer rating of 186.33. He also rushed for 669 yards and 14 touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass. He led the nation in yards/attempt and passer rating, and was second in the nation in touchdown passes.
Melvin Gordon, Running back, Wisconsin Badgers
Gordon led the nation in the following categories: carries (309), rushing yards (2,336), rushing yards per game (179.7), and rushing touchdowns (26). He was 15th in the nation in yards per carry at 7.6, but only three players ahead of Gordon on that list half as many carries as he did.
Gordon also set the single-game FBS rushing record against Nebraska IN ONLY THREE QUARTERS, rushing for 408 yards on only 25 carries. Sure, Oklahoma’s Samaje Perine broke Gordon’s record only a week later, but that doesn’t diminish the accomplishment.
Amari Cooper, Wide receiver, Alabama Crimson Tide
Cooper was in a class by himself this year among wide receivers. He led the nation with 115 receptions for 1,656 yards, and was second in the country with 14 touchdown catches. His ability as a downfield threat really opened up the Alabama offense into maybe the most dangerous it’s ever been.
The junior recorded three different games of at least 200 yards, but really cemented his Heisman candidacy against Auburn. In the Iron Bowl, Cooper caught 13 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns, helping lead the Tide to a 55-44 win and a divisional crown.
