Colorado State hires Georgia OC Mike Bobo

The former Georgia QB has been a member of the Bulldogs’ staff for most of the last 16 years. Now he’s headed to Fort Collins for his first job running a program.

Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo is headed to Colorado State as the new head coach of the Rams. The school announced the move Monday night. He will replace Jim McElwain who was hired by the Florida Gators earlier this month.

Colorado State reportedly interviewed a number of candidates, including Oregon OC Scott Frost (who, according to the Post, was uninterested), Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi, Texas DC Vance Bedford, and Ohio State co-DC Chris Ash.

Colorado State went 10-2 under McElwain in 2014, marking the Rams’ first double-digit-win season since 2002. CSU then lost the Las Vegas Bowl to No. 22 Utah with OC Dave Baldwin as the interim coach.

Bobo, a Georgia native, has spent most of his football career over the last 20 years at the University of Georgia. He played quarterback for the Bulldogs from 1993-97, throwing for 2,751 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions during his senior year. He began his coaching career by serving as an administrative assistant and graduate assistant at his alma mater in 1998 and ‘99.

Bobo then moved on to Jacksonville State, where he coached quarterbacks for one year in 2000. The following season, he returned to Athens to take the same position. In 2006, he was promoted to offense coordinator, a job he has held under Mark Richt ever since.

The Bulldogs’ scoring offense has ranked in the top 33 nationally in each of the last five seasons, including ranking eighth this season at 41.7 points per game.

During his time at UGA, Bobo has mentored quarterbacks such as David Greene, D.J. Shockley, Matthew Stafford, and Aaron Murray. Wide receiver A.J. Green and running backs Knowshon Moreno, Todd Gurley, and 2014 freshman sensation Nick Chubb have all shined under Bobo's tutelage as well.

At CSU in 2015, he will have a similar weapon in Biletnikoff finalist receiver Rashard Higgins.
