Watch the 2014 Music City Bowl: Notre Dame vs. LSU game time, TV schedule, live online stream

Which perennial power will end their disappointing season on a positive note?

SB Nation 2014 College Football Guide

Both LSU and Notre Dame spent time in the top 10 of the AP Poll this season, but neither was able to stay in the College Football Playoff hunt. They’ll each get an opportunity to partially redeem their seasons Tuesday in the Music City Bowl.

The Tigers opened the season with a win over Wisconsin, but lost their first game in late September when they fell to Mississippi State. Two weeks later, they were blown out by Auburn, effectively ending any Playoff hopes, and late losses to Alabama and Arkansas only sealed the Tigers’ fate. LSU has one of the best defenses in the country and a strong running game, but inconsistency at the quarterback position has done them in.

Notre Dame shot up to No. 5 after starting the season 6-0 with wins against Michigan, Stanford and North Carolina. The Irish lost to Florida State and squeaked by Navy, and then everything fell apart. They lost four in a row to end the season, falling to Arizona State, Northwestern, Louisville and USC.

How to watch, listen, and stream

The numbers

Rankings and records: LSU is ranked No. 23 in the Playoff rankings and the Coaches Poll, and is No. 22 in the AP Poll. Notre Dame is not ranked in either poll. The Tigers are 8-4, while the Irish are 7-5.

Vegas: LSU opened as 7.5-point favorites. The line has since moved to 7. The over/under is 52.5.

Weather forecast: High of 41 and rain.

Two things at stake

A win for LSU would avoid their first eight-win season since 2008.

A loss for Notre Dame would spell the worst year in Brian Kelly’s tenure.

One big matchup

Everett Golson vs. LSU secondary. Notre Dame's senior quarterback has had his moments, but they've been overshadowed by his penchant for back-breaking turnovers. Golson threw for 29 touchdowns against 14 interceptions this season, and threw a pick in each of his last nine games. LSU has picked off 10 passes this season, and could have the opportunity to make some plays.
