2014 Camellia Bowl, Bowling Green vs. South Alabama: Date, time, location and more

The Camellia Bowl used to regularly host the NAIA and Division II championships in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Raycom Media Camellia Bowl is one of the new bowls on the slate this season, though it’s not a new bowl game entirely.

From 1961 to 1975, and then once more in 1980, the Camellia Bowl was played in Sacramento, Calif., and hosted three NAIA and Division II championship games. The last time the game was played, in 1980, Boise State won a thriller over Eastern Kentucky, 31-29, as the Broncos became Division I-AA champs. With a handful of new bowl games needed with the new College Football Playoff beginning, officials decided to bring back the Camellia Bowl, even with a new location in Alabama.

Here is all you need to know for game day.

Date and time, ET: Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, 9:15 p.m. ET

South Alabama Jaguars, (6-6, 5-3 Sun Belt)

In just its third season of FBS play, South Alabama is going bowling. Joey Jones has guided the Jaguars to their second straight 6-6 season, this time being rewarded with a postseason appearance.

South Alabama won two games against teams with winning records this season, defeating Appalachian State and bowl-bound Texas State. The Jaguars also fell in relatively close affairs to Louisiana-Lafayette and Navy, but lost blowouts to Mississippi State, South Carolina and Georgia Southern.

Bowling Green (7-6, 5-3 MAC)

The Falcons struggled to a 7-6 record, but in a down MAC East it was good enough to get them back to Detroit to face off against Northern Illinois for the MAC title. The outcome this year was a bit different than their title game matchup from 2013, as Bowling Green was thoroughly dominated, 51-17. Their best win of the season was, uhhhh, against Indiana. The Falcons will be heading to their bowl game on a three-game losing streak, and looking to end the season on a high note. Running back Travis Greene had 908 yards and 10 TDs, while averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Their most impressive offensive player, however, was freshman wide receiver Roger Lewis. The Ohio native had 69 catches for 956 yards and five touchdowns. He had 16 catches against Indiana and will be a big part of the Falcon offense in the coming years.

Last bowl game: 2013 Little Ceasars Bowl, 30-27 loss vs. Pitt

All-time bowl record: 4-6

Head coach’s bowl record: Dino Babers, 0-0
