The 1940 Sun Bowl was the lowest-scoring game in the history of college football, because no game could possibly net fewer points. Arizona State and Catholic University played to a scoreless draw. Sun Devils quarterback Walt Ruth was 0-for-7 with two interceptions, and both teams combined for 16 yards passing and 23 punts.

Please hope that the 2014 Hyundai Sun Bowl is better. It must be better. Last year’s game was a far cry from 1940’s debacle. UCLA scored 28 points in the fourth quarter and dominated Virginia Tech, 42-12. This year, it will be Duke against Arizona State, according to ESPN.

Duke (9-3, 5-3 ACC)
Duke didn’t win the ACC Coastal division this year, but the Blue Devils are headed to a bowl game for the third straight season, and they’ve shown signs of immense improvement under coach David Cutcliffe. While this year’s Duke team had disappointing losses to Virginia Tech and North Carolina, it also beat division champion and highly ranked Georgia Tech to get out to an 8-1 start.
Anthony Boone has led the Duke offense this year, improving on his 2013 season to throw 17 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. Meanwhile, the two-headed running attack of Shaun Wilson and Shaquille Powell has been serviceable. And while inconsistent, the Duke defense has had its moments this year. A win in this game would get Duke to double-digit wins, which would be monumental for the program.

Arizona State (9-3, 6-3 Pac-12)
Just about a month ago, Arizona State looked like a contender for the College Football Playoff. The Sun Devils had just one loss and had beaten USC, Stanford, Utah and Notre Dame. At the very least, they would be a contender if they could win out and take down Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship Game. But alas, the Sun Devils’ season went through a bit of a collapse, and they lost to both Oregon State and Arizona in the final three games.
While still reeling, this is a talented Arizona State team that has the offensive firepower to compete with anybody. However, the defense could hold the Sun Devils back. It’s a mystery how the defense will play in any given game, but that should decide the outcome of this one.
