Clemson QB Deshaun Watson the Impact Freshman of the Week in his first start

The Tigers look set at the quarterback position for years.

Welcome to the Deshaun Watson era, Clemson Tigers fans.

If the rest of it goes anything like the starting debut for the true freshman, it's going to be a good one indeed, which is why Watson earns the SB Nation Impact Freshman of the Week honor after throwing for 435 yards on 27-of-36 passing with six touchdowns and one interception against the North Carolina Tar Heels in Clemson on Saturday.

His six touchdown passes were a school record and tied the all-time single-game ACC mark. Only former Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd has thrown for more yards in a game for the Tigers. The first true freshman starter for Clemson in 20 years, Watson earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors and split the conference Offensive Back of the Week honors with NC State quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

It didn’t take long for Watson to validate the decision to give him his first start, as the 6’2, 205-pounder out of Gainesville, Georgia threw a 74-yard touchdown pass on his first attempt against the Tar Heels.

Then, in the second quarter, Watson stood tall in the pocket and took a big hit while delivering a perfect ball over the shoulder of wide receiver Germone Hopper for a 50-yard touchdown pass.

All told, Watson hit 10 different receivers on the day, with four of them catching touchdown passes.

Considered a dual-threat quarterback out of high school, Watson can make opponents pay with his feet, aided by his strength and balance.

No wonder head coach Dabo Swinney has called Watson the most special player he's seen in his seven years at Clemson. At some schools, that might not mean much, but this is the program that just produced an outstanding wide receiver in Sammy Watkins, who made his mark quickly as a Tiger.

Seeing Watson ascend to the starting job so early is just a continuation of Watson’s trajectory from high school. A participant in the Elite 11 Finals, Watson was a consensus four-star prospect who was close to earning a fifth star from the services. In the 247Sports Composite rankings, he was considered the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the country, the No. 4 player in Georgia, and the No. 42 player overall after starting all four years at Gainesville High.

As the rankings would suggest, Watson was a highly coveted prospect, receiving offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, California, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Tennessee, and others.

But Watson was locked in on the Tigers from early in the process, naming them his leader way back in June of 2011, when he had yet to enter his sophomore year of high school. Over the next several months, he took at least six visits to the campus and committed on February 1, 2012.

Unlike many top prospects who commit early, Watson never wavered with his verbal pledge and signed a financial aid agreement in November of 2013 before enrolling in January of 2014 to participate in spring practice.

The extra preparation time for his true freshman season helped Watson, who entered the year as the backup quarterback to senior Cole Stoudt and saw spot action in the first two games. However, Stoudt only attempted five passes against Florida State in Week 4 before Watson came on in relief and nearly led an upset of top-ranked Florida State in completing 19-of-28 passes for 266 yards. He also added a rushing touchdown and didn't throw any interceptions.

The performance was enough for Swinney to name him the starter heading into the North Carolina game.

Since Watson rewarded that belief with a record-setting performance, how high is the ceiling for his career at Clemson? With his talent, the stratosphere seems like the appropriate answer.
