NCAA could reinstate Joe Paterno’s Penn State wins, per report

That would make Paterno Division I’s all-time winningest coach again.

After previously ending Penn State’s postseason ban and giving the team back the scholarships it lost, the NCAA could take another step and reinstate former coach Joe Paterno’s vacated wins, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Paterno, who passed away in 2012, had all of his wins from 1998 through 2011 vacated. He had set the Division I record of 409 wins, ahead of Grambling’s Eddie Robinson, who had 408. However, the vacated wins brought his total down by 111, to 298 victories.

Ever since the NCAA punishment came down and Paterno was essentially forced into retirement, many groups of Penn State fans have pushed for his wins to be reinstated. The punishment initially came after the university-commissioned Freeh Report said that Paterno did not do enough to report the sex abuses of former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. The Paterno family commissioned its own report to examine the Freeh Report, which it claims was flawed.

Internal NCAA emails show that many in the organization did not know whether they had the jurisdiction to impose the punishments that they did.
