Alamo Bowl 2014 final score: UCLA holds on to beat Kansas State, 40-35

A would-be blowout turned into a tight game late, but the Bruins were able to hold on in San Antonio.

The No. 14 UCLA Bruins built a huge lead early in the Alamo Bowl, but endured some nervy moments late before holding off No. 11 Kansas State, 40-35. Brett Hundley scored three total touchdowns (one passing and two rushing) to lead the way for UCLA.

It was 7-0 Bruins less than three minutes into the game, with Hundley capping off a quick six play drive with a 10-yard touchdown run. UCLA built their lead to 17-0 by the end of the first quarter, and after a pair of Kansas State field goals, they responded with two touchdowns off of Wildcat turnovers to build a 31-6 lead at the half. In the first 30 minutes, the Bruins out-gained Kansas State 312 yards to 104, and out-rushed them 183 yards to only 15.

The second half was a different story, however. Kansas State opened with two touchdowns, including a two-point conversion to close the gap to only 31-21. The UCLA offense completely stalled in the second half, mustering only a field goal after the break. Kansas State made it a one-score game with 4:54 remaining, but Paul Perkins iced the game for the Bruins by breaking loose on this 67-yard touchdown run with 2:20 remaining.

Kansas State was able to pull the game back to one score with a little over a minute remaining, but Perkins held onto this outlandish rabona-style onside kick to end a truly bizarre game.

Hundley ended the game 12-of-24 for 136 yards and a touchdown, rushing for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Perkins led the team with 194 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and Jordan Payton was the Bruins' leading receiver with 58 yards on four receptions.

Jake Waters went 31-of-48 for 338 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Tyler Lockett led the team with 13 receptions for 164 yards and two touchdowns, while Curry Sexton had 10 catches for 104 yards. The Wildcats ended with only 31 rushing yards as a team on 32 attempts.
