Scott Frost taking Oregon’s offense to UCF as new head coach

One of the minds behind the Ducks’ ferocious offense is headed for the AAC.

Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost will leave for UCF. He’s the first hire by new UCF AD Danny White, who arrived from Buffalo after drawing record-setting Division III head coach Lance Leipold.

He brings Oregon’s high-powered offense, which has smashed records for years. This year, despite losing Heisman winner Marcus Mariota to the first round of the NFL, it returned to being one of the country’s best after overcoming injuries to quarterback Vernon Adams, ranking No. 8 in S&P+.

UCF is in need of some offense (and everything else) after a stunning 0-12 season just two years after a Fiesta Bowl win over Baylor.

From UCF’s release:

“UCF is an excellent opportunity for me because our student-athletes can succeed immediately, both competitively and academically. We’ve had great recent success -- I vividly remember watching the Fiesta Bowl victory. With our student-athletes, football staff, facilities, fans and supporters, I know we will bring exciting and winning football back to Orlando.”

Since Frost’s arrival to Eugene, Oregon has remained one of the top offenses in the country. In 2009, the Ducks ranked 33rd in total offense and eighth in scoring. One year later, they climbed to first in the FBS in both categories, and have never dropped below sixth with Frost on staff.

Frost, 40, has been successful at just about every stop on his way to Oregon. He spent two years as a quarterback at Stanford before transferring to his native Nebraska, where he played his most noteworthy two years. He led the Huskers to a 24-2 record, both running and throwing for more than 1,000 yards in 1997, en route to Nebraska's last national championship. (He was the betting favorite for the Nebraska head coaching job before Mike Riley was hired.) Frost played six years in the NFL before returning to the college ranks as a coach.

He got on as a graduate assistant with the Cornhuskers before heading to Kansas State. Frost landed his first assistant coaching job with Northern Iowa, where he oversaw the linebackers and later served as co-defensive coordinator. After two seasons, Frost became the wide receivers coach at Oregon in 2009 and held the position until 2012.

Once Chip Kelly left for the NFL, Frost was promoted to offensive coordinator in Eugene under Mark Helfrich. Ducks fans considered the promotion a no-brainer.

Frost is regarded as an excellent recruiter and is a big reason why the Ducks have been so successful bringing in more elite talent. Working alongside the likes of Mariota in recent years, Frost is also thought of as an excellent developer of talent.
